About Us

One of the commitments of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in India , over the past three decades, is development of teakwood sector. With a good basic infra-structure and a core group of well qualified/experienced personnel of proven track record in international arena of teak, the relocated secretariat of Teaknet in KFRI addresses the core issues of sustainable management of teak. The long-term objective is to promote sustainable management and utilization of global teak wood resources by facilitating the process of capacity building among international stakeholders particularly farmers/teak growers, teak resource managers, processors/users, traders, researchers and policy makers in responding effectively to the changing social, economic and environmental needs. <!--pagebreak-->


Mission and Vision

The relocated Teaknet in KFRI in 2008 is committed to enhance the capacity of international stakeholders particularly teak growers, forest resource managers, processors, traders, researchers and policy makers in responding effectively to the changing social, economic and environmental needs. The specific objectives are:

  • To link the relevant institutions/organizations of international/regional and national significance, working on teak.
  • To facilitate the transfer of knowledge and dissemination of information among the stakeholders in all aspects of teak cultivation, marketing and utilization.
  • To facilitate the exchange of genetic materials (superior seed sources/improved planting materials) for improving plantation productivity.
  • To promote studies on critical areas those are of common interest to participating institutions/countries.

Teaknet Functioning

Teaknet currently functions as per the directions of the Teaknet Steering Committee, consisting of a Chairperson, a Vice-Chairperson and 9 members. The secretariat is managed by the Teaknet Coordinator who is the Member Secretary of the Steering Committee and responsible for implementing the decisions of the Steering Committee.

 “Planted Teak Forests – a Globally Emerging Forest Resource”

 

 

An international conference on teak will be held at Guanacaste, Costa Rica during 2-6 May 2011. The conference will be jointly organized by CATIE, FAO of the United Nations and TEAKNET. The First Announcement of the conference can be downloaded from here
